Urban Sanitation & Hygiene: A Story of Change

Stories of Change investigate how inputs have contributed to achieving specific outcomes through pathways of expected or unexpected change. This Story of Change focuses on SHARE’s contribution to research and policy and practice change related to urban sanitation and hygiene. SHARE funded several urban sanitation research projects focusing on three broad areas: health impact of sanitation in urban environments, sustainable sanitation systems and effective behaviour change.

This video reports on a SHARE-supported project in Namibia which saw a community savings group organise to link its community to the sewerage lines, creating the necessary infrastructure for safe, hygienic sanitation.

So far, across Namibia, 185 households have installed sanitation services in five settlements, 110 households are currently installing in two settlements, and five towns are preparing for project implementation.

Sanitation Issues in Namibia

This report provides information about the influence of gender and age upon community decision-making within the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN) and among other residents in poor urban settlements where SDFN is active. The research aimed to understand if, and how, household development at the settlement level differs by gender or age, and to review previous experiences with toilets.

Gender and Sanitation in Namibia

This RIU Summary outlines a study undertaken by SHARE partners, SDI and IIED, to provide information about the influence of gender and age upon community decision-making within the SDFN and among settlements where it works. By better estimatiing the country's urban sanitation challenges, it is hoped that the findings will be used to guide national sanitation policy.
