Neonatal vitamin A supplementation and immune responses to oral polio vaccine in Zimbabwean infants

This research, conducted by Church et al. (2018), explores how micronutrient deficiencies might contribute to reduced oral vaccine immunogenicity in Zimbabwean infants and how vitamin A supplements may influence this process. The work was published in Transactions of The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. A cross-sectional study of 181 infants recruited at birth to the Zimbabwe Vitamin A for Mothers and Babies (ZVITAMBO) trial in Zimbawe (1197 – 2001) was carried out and poliovirus-specific IgA to type 1–3 polio strains was measured. Their results showed no significant effect of neonatal vitamin A supplements augmenting oral polio vaccine responses in Zimbabwean infants.

Immune responses to oral poliovirus vaccine in HIV-exposed uninfected Zimbabwean infants

Church et al. (2017) published this paper in Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics. The research attempts to clarify whether HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants have impaired responses to oral vaccines. A cross-sectional study of infants recruited at birth to the Zimbabwe Vitamin A for Mothers and Babies (ZVITAMBO) trial in Zimbawe (1197 – 2001) was carried out. Poliovirus-specific IgA to type 1–3 polio strains was measured in 85 HEU and 101 HIV-unexposed infants at 6 months of age, one month after their last immunisation with trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine. Almost all of the infants were breastfed. The results suggested that vertical HIV exposure does not impact oral poliovirus vaccine immunogenicity.

Sharing reflections on inclusive sanitation

How Collective Action Strategies of the Urban Poor Can Improve Access to Sanitation

This report draws on research undertaken in Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia and Malawi as part of the SHARE-funded City-Wide Sanitation project and reflects on processes that can trigger and/or develop collective action to identify sanitation needs, and on the scope that they have to develop appropriate, affordable, scalable sanitation solutions for low-income communities. It specifically considers how federations of the urban poor have collectively organised around sanitation on several fronts.

Sharing Reflections on Inclusive Sanitation

Drawing on the sanitation innovations that were part of the City Wide Sanitation project which took place in Blantyre, Chinhoyi, Dar es Salaam, and Kitwe, this paper reflects upon what an inclusive approach to sanitation might involve. This includes what is possible for low-income households when there is little or no external support, no piped water supply and no city sewers to connect to.

Building City-Wide Strategies from the Bottom Up: Zimbabwe Situational Analysis

Rapidly growing urban populations and informal settlements coupled with inadequate sanitation provision create a concerning picture in the majority of major cities in developing countries. The SHARE-funded City-Wide Sanitation project that took place in Zimbabwe, amongst other countries, seeks to address this. One of the first steps of the project was an analysis of the current situation in the city under study, Chinhoyi, the results of which are outlined in this research report.

Building City-Wide Strategies from the Bottom Up

This report provides an overview of the SHARE-funded City-Wide Sanitation Project that took place in four southern African countries as a response to the failures of conventional approaches to urban sanitation. The project sought to develop a model for the development and realization of pro-poor citywide sanitation through four scalable examples in cities of Blantyre (Malawi), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Kitwe (Zambia), and Chinhoyi (Zimbabwe). This report documents progress to date (June 2013).
