Wastewater Use for Vegetable Farming and Post-Harvest Health Risk Management in Ghana

This policy brief provides an overview of research conducted by SHARE-funded PhD student Prince Antwi-Agyei, and provides key recommendations to improve the WHO guidelines on the safe use of wastewater for urban agriculture. It also suggests how governments in low and middle income countries - in particular the Government of Ghana - could manage produce health risks arising from wastewater use and post-harvest practices at farms, markets, street vending sites and restaurants.

Wastewater Use For Urban Agriculture and Health Risk to Farm Workers

This policy brief presents the key findings from a SHARE-funded PhD project on key exposure pathways assocated with the transmission of faecal pathogens in farm workers using wastewater for irrigation in Ghana. The findings and recommendations are intended to inform and influence WHO guidelines and governments in low and middle income countries, particularly the Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies in Ghana.

Risk Perceptions of Wastewater use for Urban Agriculture in Accra, Ghana

This paper draws on SHARE PhD Student Prince Antwi-Agyei's PhD study into wastewater use in urban agriculture. This study sought to assess the knowledge and awareness of wastewater use for crop production, its related health risks, and adoption of health protective measures by farmers, market salespersons and consumers using questionnaires and focus group discussions. It found that awareness of the source of irrigation water was low among consumers and street food vendors, though higher among market vendors. In contrast, health risk awareness was generally high among salespersons and consumers, but low among farmers. It also found that consumers did not prioritize health indicators when buying produce from vendors but were motivated to buy produce, or prepared food based on taste, friendship, cost, convenience and freshness of produce. Similarly, farmers’ awareness of health risk did not influence their adoption of safer farm practices. The study recommends the promotion of interventions that would result in more direct benefits to both producers and vendors, together with hygiene education and enforcement of food safety byelaws in order to influence behaviour change, and increase the uptake of the multiple-barrier approach

A Farm to Fork Risk Assessment for the Use of Wastewater in Agriculture in Accra, Ghana

This paper draws on SHARE PhD Student Prince Antwi-Agyei's PhD study into wastewater use in urban agriculture. The study sought to identify key risk factors for produce contamination at different entry points of the food chain. It found that over 80% of produce samples were contaminated with E. coli, with street food salad being the most contaminated, and that consumption of salads did not meet health standards. The risk factors for produce contamination identified were: farm soil and irrigation water contamination, poor hygiene, poor storage of produce, and operating with a hygiene permit.

Wastewater Use in Urban Agriculture: an Exposure and Risk Assessment in Accra, Ghana (Thesis)

This is SHARE Phd student Prince Antwi-Agyei's thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in September 2015.

It documents his study which sought to quantify and compare the health risks associated with wastewater use in the occupational domain, with those risks that ‘normally’ occur within the public and domestic domains.

Wastewater Irrigation in Ghana

This video was produced by Prince Antwi-Agyei, a SHARE-funded PhD student, investigating wastewater use in urban agriculture in Accra, Ghana.

The video documents some of the key pathways through which faecal pathogens are transmitted to farmers using wastewater for irrigation and to consumers of wastewater irrigated salad produce during the ‘farm-to-fork’ food chain.
