Building partnership for participatory sanitation and hygiene planning: Lessons and experience from Tanzania

This meeting paper was written by Beale et al. for the 41st WEDC International Conference in Kenya in 2018. It gives an overview of the SHARE project, Cities of Tomorrow, which details townwide sanitation planning for the rapidly urbanising Tanzanian town, Babati. The Cities of Tomorrow research project is using participatory approaches to work with stakeholders in Babati to build the evidence needed to help develop and inform a townwide sanitation and hygiene plan and to feed into the development of the Babati spatial master plan. This paper describes some of the lessons learned through the development of the partnership between government, academic and non-governmental institutions working together on this project.

Outcome mapping and research into use: analysing monitoring data for effective strategies

This article by Balls and Nurova (2020) was published in Development in Practice. The paper analyses outcome mapping data to uncover effective strategies for engaging practitioners and policymakers with research projects. The project focuses on SHARE and the four countries it works in - Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia. The article identifies three emerging themes: early engagement, using existing and new forums and seizing opportunities. It discusses the contextual difference and the relevance of outcome mapping methodology for research into use and is relevant for those seeking to engage and influence stakeholders with their research and programmes.

Factors perceived to facilitate or hinder handwashing among primary students: a qualitative assessment of the Mikono Safi intervention schools in NW Tanzania

This paper was published in BMJ Open by Okello et al. (2019). The study used qualitative methods to assess the effects of a multi-modal school-based water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) intervention on handwashing behaviour among primary students in North Western (NW) Tanzania. Barriers and facilitators to handwashing were explored in the students who participated in the Mikono Safi Trial (Kiswahili for ‘Clean Hands). The intervention increased students' reported capability and motivation to wash their hands with soap at key times, particularly after visiting the toilet. Improvements in students’ handwashing knowledge and skills were reported by both teachers and students, and motivation for handwashing was enhanced by emotional drivers such as disgust, fear and nurture. Newly established handwashing stations improved the physical opportunity to wash hands, although the availability of water and the provision of soap was not always consistent (e.g. due to internal organisational shortcomings or during the dry season). Students and teachers were actively engaged in intervention implementation which created a school community that valued and supported improved hand hygiene.

What Proportion Counts? Disaggregating Access to Safely Managed Sanitation in an Emerging Town in Tanzania

This paper by Komakech et al. was published in 2019 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. The paper discusses the inconsistency in sanitation data generated by urban authorities and proposes a simple approach for collecting reliable and verifiable information on access to safely managed sanitation. The work is based on a study conducted in Babati Town Council in Tanzania. Using a smartphone-based survey tool, city health officers were trained to map 17,383 housing units in the town. A housing unit may comprise of two or more households. The findings show that 5% practice open defecation, while 82% of the housing units have some form of sanitation. Despite the extensive coverage, only 31% of the fecal sludge generated is safely contained, while 64% is not. This study demonstrates the possibility of using simple survey tools to collect reliable data for monitoring progress towards safely managed sanitation in the towns of global South.

Water-Handling Patterns and Associated Microbial Profiles in relation to Hygiene in Babati Town, Tanzania

This paper was published by Tesha et al. (2019) in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health. The paper explores water-handling patterns and associated microbial profiles related to hygiene in Babati, Tanzania. This is a crucial area of research due to the rapidly urbanising centres in Tanzania. This often means that water supply infrastructure lags behind, affecting water availability and accessibility. Three water-handling chains/patterns were determined and the study found that people in Babati tended to rely on these chains equally. The most contaminated water was the untreated-source-straight-to-households chain. This research may inform the development of polices in the areas of household hygiene education, drinking water treatment, and water supply planning in urbanized towns in Tanzania and other developing countries.

Contamination of groundwater sources in emerging African towns: the case of Babati town, Tanzania

This paper describes the assessment of groundwater contamination potential in Babati, Manyara, Tanzania. It was conducted by Pantaleo et al. (2018) and published in Water Practice and Technology. Fecal coliforms (FC) and high NO3 concentrations were present in wells less than 30 m deep. The maximum FC level was 280 CFU/100 ml, and the nitrate (NO3) ranged from 1.1 to 357.7 mg-NO3/l. In boreholes, nitrate concentrations ranged from 2.3 to 32.6 mg-NO3/l, below both national and WHO standards, and were all free of fecal coliform. Other parameters were all within recommended limits for all wells tested. Findings showed that most shallow wells (64%) are polluted and could cause health problems for users; it is therefore important that the community avoids relying on shallow wells. Boiling of domestic water before use is also recommended.

Applying outcome mapping to plan, monitor and evaluate policy influence; learning from the SHARE research consortium

SHARE has applied outcome mapping as an approach to plan, monitor and evaluate its research into use work. Outcome mapping (OM) is an iterative approach to project planning, monitoring and evaluation which seeks to identify, engage and work with the key stakeholders who are likely to help foster transformative change. This learning report documents SHARE’s OM experience and presents key areas of learning; resourcing OM, context and culture, analysing OM data, adaptive approaches and ways of working. It also makes recommendations for other implementers using OM or OM principles in programmes.

Behaviour Change for WASH: Policy Brief

Since 2010, the SHARE Consortium has prioritised behaviour change in WASH interventions, championing the importance of identifying novel and creative approaches to changing behaviours across many countries. This policy brief documents SHARE’s contribution to understanding behaviour change and associated health impacts. It provides recommendations for researchers and intervention implementers, policy makers and funders.
