Share research - Urban Sanitation

For the first time, more people in the world live in urban rather than rural settings. This growing trend of urbanisation means that urban areas are growing more and more populous, which when combined with a lack of infrastructure creates a significant sanitation and hygiene challenge. The majority of countries in Africa did not meet the Millennium Development Goal target for sanitation in urban areas.

Recognising the importance of addressing urbanisation and adequate hygiene and sanitation issues as key for development. SHARE invested in research, capacity development and research into use on a variety of themes with the ultimate goal of promoting sustainable sanitation in urban environments. SHARE funded several projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the development of research and programme support tools to better address the issue.

Building partnership for participatory sanitation and hygiene planning: Lessons and experience from Tanzania

This meeting paper was written by Beale et al. for the 41st WEDC International Conference in Kenya in 2018. It gives an overview of the SHARE project, Cities of Tomorrow, which details townwide sanitation planning for the rapidly urbanising Tanzanian town, Babati. The Cities of Tomorrow research project is using participatory approaches to work with stakeholders in Babati to build the evidence needed to help develop and inform a townwide sanitation and hygiene plan and to feed into the development of the Babati spatial master plan. This paper describes some of the lessons learned through the development of the partnership between government, academic and non-governmental institutions working together on this project.

Policy brief: Changing urban sanitation infrastructure through behaviour change interventions in Lusaka, Zambia

This policy brief details how CIDRZ's San-Dem project used behaviour centred design (BCD) to improve sanitation quality in an informal urban settlement in Lusaka, Zambia. The brief gives recommendations on next steps for scaling up the San-Dem project nationally and globally.

What Proportion Counts? Disaggregating Access to Safely Managed Sanitation in an Emerging Town in Tanzania

This paper by Komakech et al. was published in 2019 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. The paper discusses the inconsistency in sanitation data generated by urban authorities and proposes a simple approach for collecting reliable and verifiable information on access to safely managed sanitation. The work is based on a study conducted in Babati Town Council in Tanzania. Using a smartphone-based survey tool, city health officers were trained to map 17,383 housing units in the town. A housing unit may comprise of two or more households. The findings show that 5% practice open defecation, while 82% of the housing units have some form of sanitation. Despite the extensive coverage, only 31% of the fecal sludge generated is safely contained, while 64% is not. This study demonstrates the possibility of using simple survey tools to collect reliable data for monitoring progress towards safely managed sanitation in the towns of global South.

Water-Handling Patterns and Associated Microbial Profiles in relation to Hygiene in Babati Town, Tanzania

This paper was published by Tesha et al. (2019) in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health. The paper explores water-handling patterns and associated microbial profiles related to hygiene in Babati, Tanzania. This is a crucial area of research due to the rapidly urbanising centres in Tanzania. This often means that water supply infrastructure lags behind, affecting water availability and accessibility. Three water-handling chains/patterns were determined and the study found that people in Babati tended to rely on these chains equally. The most contaminated water was the untreated-source-straight-to-households chain. This research may inform the development of polices in the areas of household hygiene education, drinking water treatment, and water supply planning in urbanized towns in Tanzania and other developing countries.

Understanding demand for higher quality sanitation in peri-urban Lusaka, Zambia through stated and revealed preference analysis

In this paper, published in Social Science & Medicine, Tidwell et al. (2019) discuss the role of consumer demand in increasing peri-urban sanitation quality for tenants using shared sanitation. The authors analysed data on existing housing markets using the Hedonistic Pricing Method (HPM) to capture the percentage of rent attributable to sanitation quality. They also conducted discrete choice experiments (DCEs) to obtain willingness to pay (WTP) estimates for specific sanitation components and explored the implications this had on investment return for landlords making sanitation improvements. The study found that 18% of rental prices were attributed to sanitation and the tenants were willing to pay $2.20 more rent per month for flushing toilets on plots with running water and $3.39 more per month for solid toilet doors. Solid doors and flushing toilets had higher rent increase to cost ratios than other ways landlords commonly invested in their plots. Interventions leveraging landlords' profit motives could lead to significant improvements in peri-urban sanitation quality, reduced diarrheal disease transmission, and increased well-being without subsidies or infrastructure investments by government or NGOs.

Using a theory-driven creative process to design a peri-urban on-site sanitation quality improvement intervention

Tidwell et al.’s (2019) paper, published in BMC Public Health, discusses the authors’ experiences of using the Behaviour Centered Design (BCD) framework to design a sanitation quality improvement behaviour change intervention for a peri-urban site in Lusaka, Zambia. The intervention aimed to encourage landlords to improve their toilets by making them more accessible, desirable, hygienic and sustainable. Use of the BCD model resulted in a theory-driven, creative and multi-faceted intervention. This work advances applied behavioural science, will be able to be adapted to improve on-site sanitation in other settings and will contribute to the iterative development of the BCD model.
