Behaviour Change for WASH: Policy Brief

Since 2010, the SHARE Consortium has prioritised behaviour change in WASH interventions, championing the importance of identifying novel and creative approaches to changing behaviours across many countries. This policy brief documents SHARE’s contribution to understanding behaviour change and associated health impacts. It provides recommendations for researchers and intervention implementers, policy makers and funders.

The public health significance of latrines discharging to groundwater used for drinking

Faecal contamination of groundwater from pit latrines is widely perceived as a major threat to the safety of drinking water for several billion people in rural and peri-urban areas worldwide. This study, conducted by icddr,b on the floodplains of the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta in Bangladesh, found (i) that leakage from pit latrines is a minor contributor to faecal contamination of drinking water in alluvialdeltaic terrains; (ii) fears of increased groundwater pollution should not constrain expanding latrine coverage, and (iii) that more attention should be given to reducing contamination around the well-head.

Hygiene on maternity units: lessons from a needs assessment in Bangladesh and India

This study by Cross et al. (2016), published in Global Health Action, details a needs assessment that was conducted in seven maternity units in Gujarat, India, and eight in Dhaka Division, Bangladesh. The findings and conclusions include that visual assessment of cleanliness and hygiene is an inadequate marker for ‘safety’ in terms of the presence of potential pathogens and associated risk of infection.

Safe distances between groundwater-based water wells and pit latrines at different hydrogeological conditions in the Ganges Atrai floodplains of Bangladesh

Groundwater drawn from shallow tubewells in Bangladesh is often polluted by nearby pit latrines, which are commonly used toilets in rural and sub-urban areas of the country. To determine the minimum safe distance of a tubewell from a pit latrine in different hydrogeological conditions of Bangladesh, 20 monitoring wells were installed at three study sites. The results showed that the safe distance from the tubewell to the pit latrine varied from site to site depending on the horizontal and vertical distances of the tubewell as well as hydrogeological conditions of a particular area.

Faecal contamination of commuters’ hands in main vehicle stations in Dhaka city, Bangladesh

This study, conducted at icddr,b by Islam et al (2016) explored whether faecal-oral carriage via hands was an important transmission pathway for diarrhoeal pathogens. Collecting samples from 900 communters, the study found that both the left and right hands of Dhaka commuters were equally contaminated with faecal bacteria. The study was published in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

The Missing Ingredients: Are Policy-Makers Doing Enough on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene to End Malnutrition?

This report, conducted by SHARE and WaterAid, highlights why water, sanitation and hygiene are essential for nutrition. Through an analysis of national nutrition plans and policies in 13 countries, the research highlights the extent to which WASH is embedded at policy level and where and how improvements must be made.

Bangladesh National Hygiene Baseline Survey

Responding to a lack of nationally representative baseline data on hygiene practices in Bangladesh, WaterAid Bangladesh and ICDDR,B undertook a baseline survey that will help inform programming and resourcing country-wide. This research brief summarises the key findings of the report, the full version of which can be viewed here.

WASH & CLEAN Toolkit

The WASH & CLEAN Toolkit is a free set of tools developed as part of a SHARE and WSSCC-funded study of the same name. The tools are to be used to perform a situation analysis of the state of hygiene (outcomes) on the maternity unit, as measured by visual cleanliness and the presence of potential pathogens, and individual and contextual/systems level determinants. They can be used as part of an internal audit process, as part of a continuous improvement cycle, or as part of a wider research study.

Application of the tools is to be undertaken by health facility IPC Committees (or equivalent), researchers, or external agencies as commissioned for the purpose. The data gathered by the tools is for use by health facility senior management, district and regional health management teams, policy makers, and research institute(s). The data can be used to identify priority areas and inform intervention, provide indicators to support performance, and information to inform policy.

WASH and Maternal and Newborn Health: Time to Act

This policy brief documents the state of the evidence on how poor WASH impacts MNH and summarises SHARE's contribution to our understanding. It also highlights opportunities for future research and offers insights that could influence policy and improve programming in both sectors globally. In doing so, it offers a powerful argument in favour of using WASH to support efforts on MNH to leverage greater progress in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, and offers concrete recommendations as to how this opportunity might be seized.
