Malaria risk profile 2018: Republic of Sudan

Sudan

Malaria in Sudan

Sudan is a high-burden and high-risk country for malaria. Malaria risk is diverse across the country.

A main area of focus for national planning is moving states with very low malaria transmission into the pre-elimination phase of malaria control.

Making data available

In 2011, as part of Phase 1, the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust programme/INFORM project worked with the Federal National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) to collect available malaria prevalence information and map extents of urban settings and refugees to produce an evidenced-based malaria risk map for the country.

The 2018 report, builds on previous collaborative work with the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), to develop a practical malaria cartography that can meet the needs of future sub-national control and elimination planning. It uses additional data generated during the 2016 national Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS) and may serve as a locality-specific baseline for future analysis of epidemiological impact.

A complete, geo-coded database of historical and contemporary survey data (1924-2016), bibliography and digital survey report library was provided to the FMoH with the 2018 report.

As part of Phase 2 LINK collated evidence from 503 published articles or MSc/PhD theses and 13 implementation reports/policies.
