Breaking Taboos: Training Trainers on Menstrual Hygiene in Emergencies

23 May 2013

SHARE supported a recent training session for trainers on Menstrual Hygiene Management in Emergencies, hosted by RedR. The first of its kind, the session was designed and led by Sarah House (independent Water & Sanitation Engineer), Sue Cavill (SHARE Research Manager at WaterAid), and Michelle Farrington (RedR UK).

The training aimed to build the confidence of WASH sector staff to talk about issues faced by women and girls in emergency settings. The training covered topics such as: the basics of MHM - physiology, taboos, and the realities for women and girls; cross-sectoral communication; assessment, feedback and monitoring; design of WASH facilities - toilets, bathing facilities and mechanisms for the washing and disposal of sanitary items; sanitary protection materials and other NFIs needed to manage menstruation; MHM in schools and medical facilities; and further research and learning needed in this area.
