Bangladesh is one of the most populous countries in the world and just under half of its 159 million population lives on less than US$2 a day (World Bank, 2015). Estimates indicate that 61% of the population has access to improved sanitation and only 1% still practises open defecation (WHO/UNICEF 2015). Bangladesh experiences frequent flooding as a low-lying country, which presents unique challenges to maintaining safe sanitation and hygiene practices.

SHARE worked in Bangladesh since its inception in 2010. Through its partner the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Control, Bangladesh, SHARE undertook a range of research projects covering issues such as: weaning food hygiene, the contamination of ground drinking water due to poor sanitation, and the contamination of commuters’ hands.
