Malawi
About
Malawi is one of the smaller countries in Sub-Saharan African and home to 16 million people. An estimated 35% of the Malawian population does not have access to an improved form of sanitation, of which 4%, the majority of which reside in rural areas, practices open defecation (WHO/UNICEF, 2015).
SHARE has been working in Malawi since 2010 and has conducted research on a range of issues including: ecological sanitation, urban sanitation, handwashing with soap, menstrual hygiene management (MHM), faecal sludge and solide waste management, and private sector participation. We also supported the first ever sector-level meeting on MHM in Malawi between civil society, researchers and national government, and co-convened a dynamic radio debate that engaged researchers, government officials, policy makers, practitioners and members of the public in discussions on sanitation and hygiene delivery.
SHARE's second phase of work in Malawi (2015-2018) focuses on the theme of WASH and food hygiene.
