icddr,b Scientist Dr Md Sirajul Islam Receives Gold Medal

icddr,b’s emeritus scientist Dr Md Sirajul Islam has received this year’s Rotary SEED Award 2016 by the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka

Environmental microbiologist Dr Islam’s breakthrough discovery of Phytoplankton - mainly the blue green algae as the inter-epidemic reservoir of cholera, and consequent innovation of “Siraj Mixture” to neutralise the algae to control cholera have been credited for this prestigious award. Dr. Islam has a long glorious career in research, dedicated to improve the quality of health of the people of Bangladesh and beyond.

Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman presented Dr Islam with the Gold Medal in a ceremony held at The Westin Dhaka on Saturday, October 29, 2016.  Rotary District Governor Muhammad Ayub, President Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka Tawfiq Ali, Chairman of the Installation and SEED Award ceremony Mr. Khalid Hasan and other dignitaries were also present at the event.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Islam shared the background of his research and innovation of Siraj Mixture. He shared his plan to open up orphanage with the award grants for the disadvantaged children of the village he is from. He also expressed his gratitude to icddr,b and Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka.    

Awarded annually the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions in the fields of Science, Education and Economic Development (SEED) that benefit the nation.

Earlier in 2014, Dr Islam was awarded gold medal by the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) - the leading scientific organisation of the scientists of eminence in Bangladesh.
