A new MSc scholarship supported by the Jeroen Ensink Memorial Fund has been announced by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The full scholarship will be awarded to a student from sub-Saharan Africa or South Asia to undertake the MSc in Public Health for Development course in the 2017-18 academic year.

The Jeroen Ensink Memorial Fund commemorates the life and work of Dr Ensink, Senior Lecturer in Public Health Engineering at the School, and was established following his death in December 2015. Dr Ensink was an internationally renowned water engineer and dedicated humanitarian.

The new scholarship, which was announced on his birthday, 10 November, ensures that the legacy of his work will continue. Dr Ensink was passionately committed to improving access to water and sanitation around the world, above all in low-income countries where children continue to die due to lack of basic services. At the time of his death he was leading work to improve the control of cholera in emergency situations. He worked closely with research institutes in Africa and Asia and devoted much effort to supporting them in developing research capacity. To date, the memorial fund established in his name has received more than 400 donations totalling over £87,000.

Joanna Schellenberg, Professor of Epidemiology and International Health at the School, said: “Jeroen was a brilliant researcher and a hugely committed teacher who inspired a new generation of public health professionals. We are grateful for the many generous donations to his memorial fund, from both the School community and members of the public. “These kind gifts are a testament to his life and work. Jeroen was a Course Director for the MSc in Public Health for Development. We are thrilled that the new scholarship will enable a student from a low-or-middle income country to complete this valuable course.”

The MSc in Public Health for Development equips students with key skills to analyse the state of public health in low- and middle-income countries and to design and evaluate actions to address public health concerns. The new scholarship is open for applications until 2 April 2017.
