Innovative Communal Sanitation Models for the Urban Poor. Lessons from Uganda.

This report, prepared by SHARE-partner Shack/Slum Dwellers International, explore ongoing learning process in developing sustainable solutions to basic sanitation needs in developing countries. It particularly focusses on progress relating to the construction and management of two toilet blocks in Jinja and Kampala (Uganda). It presents an overview and reflection of the design, financial models, processes adopted as well as the challenges faced. Discussions about scaling-up sanitation provision through these models are also presented. Finally, it summarises key lessons learnt from the experience.
