SHARE end of phase II report

This report provides a comprehensive overview of SHARE's work from January 2010 - December 2018; describing both phase I and phase II of SHARE.

The report covers SHARE's progress so far. During phase I dozens of research projects across a broad range of themes were supported through open global calls. Phase II built on the successes of phase I and had a more streamlined approach. Four thematic areas (WASH and nutrition, urban sanitation, complementary food hygiene and links to oral vaccination for enteric diseases) were the focus of research led by partners in four African countries: Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Kenya. Achieving research impact and capacity development in the study countries have also been an important focus of phase II. The report details how each of our output indicators - research, research into use, capacity development and management - has been met or exceeded.

You may be wondering why this report is called an 'end-of-programme' report. Originally, SHARE was planned to finish at the end of 2018. However, our funders, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), have granted us an 18-month extension (starting for January 2019) to take SHARE into its third phase. This is testament to the great work done by the SHARE consortium and the potential for the research produced by SHARE to impact positively on policy and practiceThe purpose of the extension is to ensure just this. During phase III we will work to ensure that the research coming out of our phase II research projects impacts and influences key WASH policies and practices. We will also continue working with our partners to strengthen their capacity to conduct world-leading research. Keep an eye on our website to hear more about our phase III plans over the coming weeks!

The report was submitted to DFID in January 2019.
