SHARE Research Subject of PLoS AMA
This week, SHARE research on improving WASH for MNH was the subject of a PLoS Science Wednesday Ask Me Anything (AMA) live chat on Reddit Science, the popular online gathering place for researchers, students and other science aficionados.
Why an AMA?
AMAs were conceived to showcase interesting new research and to provide PLoS authors with a space in which to communicate their science and interact directly with fellow researchers and readers. For 1 hour every Wednesday, Reddit Science members are able to chat directly with the featured PLOS author(s) who answer posted questions and explain the science behind their recently published PLoS article/editorial. Non-members can also read along.
Talking Global Health
With a weekly audience of around 10,000, SHARE researchers Yael Velleman, Oliver Cumming and Pinaki Panigrahi jumped at the opportunity to participate in a Global Health AMA featuring two of their papers:
- From Joint Thinking to Joint Action: A Call to Action on Improving Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene for Maternal and Newborn Health
- Risk of Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes among Women Practicing Poor Sanitation in Rural India: A Population-Based Prospective Cohort Study
So, on 28th October 2015, Yael, Oliver and Pinaki answered a range of questions on the impact of WASH on global public health from newbies and seasoned WASH/global health experts alike. Not only was the AMA was an excellent way for them to get the word out about their work, but it also allowed them to draw attention to vital importance of prioritising WASH for maternal and newborn survival.
