16 Oct 2015

This month SHARE researchers are off to Mexico and the USA to present their work and discuss its implications in the post-2015 agenda.

Why Mexico?

The first-ever Global Maternal Newborn Health (MNH) Conference is taking place 18-21 October 2015 in Mexico City. Technical implementers, policymakers, researchers and practitioners from global maternal and newborn health communities in more than 50 countries will come together to discuss strategies for reaching every mother and newborn with high-quality health care.

SHARE is delighted to be hosting the only WASH-related panel discussion at this landmark conference. The session, entitled ‘WASH and MNH – using what we know to accelerate progress on WASH access and MNH outcomes’ and taking place on Monday 19th October, aims to consolidate what we know and discuss policy implications of this evidence. It will include presentations on research conducted by LSHTM, the Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar, USAID, UNICEF, and the University at Buffalo, and will feature the following SHARE-supported studies:

Why the States?

Every year, global WASH experts – SHARE included – descend on the Water Institute at the UNC for its annual Water & Health Conference: Where Science Meets Policy. This year, SHARE has another good year planned. We will be co-convening the following three side events:

  1. WASH and MNH – using the current evidence base to move from joint thinking to joint action (background reading)
  2. You Are What You Eat – behavioural approaches to address the neglected WASH area of food hygiene (background reading)
  3. No Longer a Pipe Dream – tools to make WASH-NTD integration a reality (background reading)

We will also be participating in the 'WASH's Invisible Women – expanding the WASH/gender agenda' side event convened by CARE, University of Oklahoma, Emory University, USAID, WaterAid, and the Millennium Water Alliance. This event will share new data, tools, and approaches that can be incorporated into existing WASH research and practice and will lay the ground work for future collaborations and workshops focused on transitioning gender mainstreaming from a concept and a discussion into a reality.

These will all feature a range of SHARE-supported research, so check back in at the end of the month to find out more!
